Whether it’s your grandmother’s unrivaled apple crisp, your neighbour’s prize-winning apple pie or the finger licking applesauce you make for your kids, no one seems to tire of the many edible ways we can enjoy apple bounty.

A VERY QUICK HISTORY OF APPLE CIDER

We can thank the Europeans for the gift of cider. The Greeks and Romans were the first to discover that sweet apple cider juice left on to its own device turns into a delightful autumn beverage. Thanks to the wonders of fermentation, the humble golden juice becomes an effervescent delight. Today’s cider fans are a discerning bunch. Cider wineries have taken note, and there’s lots of varieties to choose from, each with its own distinct flavour, body and tasting notes.

APPLE CIDER MENU

Sweeter ciders are fermented slowly and repeatedly strained. This removes the sugar-feeding yeast. Dryer ciders are less sweet because they’re strained less: the yeast is left to feed on the sugars and reduces the overall sugar content. This means there’s a cider for every palate! From sweet to dry, here are some refreshing options that are perfect for a crisp fall treat.

SWEET

Strongbow Original Cider is a glorious golden color with notes of brown sugar and cinnamon. It’s a blend of bittersweet cider apples.

Looking for another sweet cider? Try Molson Canadian Cider! This cider, in particular, is balanced by a mild effervescence. It compliments creamy and spicy foods like roast pork and smoked salmon.

MEDIUM SWEET

Magners Original Irish Cider is considered medium sweet. Despite the 17 different apples varieties in its recipe, a yellow apple flavour comes through. The yeast we were talking about? Magners has used the same yeast strain since 1935!

DRY

Rock Creek Dry Apple Cider is made from English-style apples which gives it a distinct, full-bodied flavour. You might recognize notes of pear, cinnamon, vanilla, and ginger.

River Valley Cider is made from Okanagan apples. It’s slightly more carbonated than other varieties, leading to a dry, refreshing flavour.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CIDER

Did you know there are actual health benefits to cider? It’s a great source of antioxidants – the same quantity found in wine. Plus, cider is a great option for those who follow gluten-free diets.
